Congressman Mike Garcia (CA-27) issued a statement on September 10, 2024, after signing the discharge petition for H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act.

“I’ve always fought to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) because they unfairly cut Social Security benefits for our retired public servants,” said Rep. Garcia. “Workers and their spouses who paid into Social Security should not be penalized for devoting their careers to serving their communities. In California’s 27th District, thousands of retired police officers, firefighters, and teachers are getting shortchanged by these outdated policies. That’s why I’m proud to have signed the discharge petition today to bring this bill to a vote.”

“Social Security is a contract with Americans that the government must honor. Right now, too many of our public servants are getting only a fraction of the benefits they’ve earned, and that’s just wrong,” continued Rep. Garcia. “I’ll keep pushing to get H.R. 82 across the finish line so our retirees finally get what they deserve, and I will always vote to protect Social Security.”
