Senator Suzette Valladares, a member of the California State Senate, recently posted several messages on her Twitter account discussing state energy policy and public recognition for farmworkers.
On March 17, 2026, Valladares commented on California’s gas prices compared to other states. She wrote, “It’s no mystery why CA gas prices are higher than every other state. CA has pushed production out. Now we import most of our crude, while still using millions of barrels a day. Demand didn’t disappear. Supply did. Sacramento piled on mandates, regulations, and threats of new https://t.co/HB6qJ4B420”.
The following day, March 18, she shared a link in a separate tweet: “https://t.co/irPoAxBZln”.
Later that same day, Valladares addressed a proposal by LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn regarding César Chávez Day. She stated, “Agreed! And the State of CA should follow suit! LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn calls for ‘César Chávez Day’ to be changed to ‘Farmworker Day’ https://t.co/MJQ3nPignM”.
California’s gasoline prices have historically ranked among the highest in the United States due to a combination of environmental regulations, fuel blend requirements unique to the state, and limited refining capacity. The state’s dependence on imported crude oil has grown as local production has declined over recent years.
César Chávez Day is observed annually in California and honors labor leader César Chávez’s contributions to farmworkers’ rights. Proposals such as the one referenced by Valladares seek to broaden recognition from an individual figure to all farmworkers across the state.
