Senator Suzette Martinez Valladares (R–Santa Clarita) has urged U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff to support a clean continuing resolution aimed at reopening the federal government. The ongoing shutdown, now in its fourth week, is affecting communities throughout her district, including Santa Clarita, the Antelope Valley, and the Victor Valley. These areas are home to many federal civilian employees and contractors.
In her letter to Senators Padilla and Schiff, Valladares wrote about the serious impact of the shutdown on local families and businesses. “We are now in the fourth week of the shutdown, and its effects are being felt statewide — but they’re especially painful in my district,” said Senator Valladares. “Families are missing paychecks, small businesses are hurting, and Californians are being forced to make impossible choices because of a crisis they didn’t create.”
She noted that more than 150,000 federal civilian employees in California have not received pay during the shutdown. In addition, about 5.5 million state residents who depend on CalFresh food assistance may soon face disruptions to their benefits.
Valladares called on California’s U.S. Senators to work together for a bipartisan solution that would keep the government open. “This is no time for political games,” she said. “Californians expect leadership, not finger-pointing. I’m calling on our federal representatives to put people before politics and pass a clean continuing resolution that provides stability for families, businesses, and public servants across our state.”
The senator has been an advocate for fiscal responsibility, accountability in government, and policies supporting working families.
